What began in 1938 with two Danish engineers and a dream is today India’s largest multi- dimensional engineering and construction company. Henning Holck-Larsen and Soren K. Toubro set up a partnership in a small office in the downtown Mumbai. They marketed dairy equipment. A year later, when the World War II broke out, the fledgling company’s genius for innovation came to the fore. It began to manufacture the products that it used to import.
In 1945, L&T was appointed distributors of Caterpillar, the American earthmoving machinery giant. Soon, the firm became a limited company, and a nationwide network of offices was set up. The wheels of growth which would propel the company to its position of distinction had been set into motion. And long before mission statements became industry buzzwords, L&T had set out a charter of itself – the company would meet the needs of India’s emerging core sectors. Alongside, the business philosophy laid emphasis on the customer service. ‘In service Lies Success’ was enshrined as a corporate motto.
At L&T Construction & Mining Machinery, this is a proud moment for all of us. As we mark the 75 years of our business, we look back with pride at the challenges associated with creating the engineering marvels of India – Bahai Temple, Bombay Stock Exchange, Motera Stadium, Medigadda Barrage, Statue of Unity and many others.
With a wide range of equipment, L&T Construction & Mining Machinery has been helping build the nation. Hydraulic Excavators, Wheel Loaders, Crawler Dozers, Motor Graders, Dump Trucks, Heavy Tippers, Vibratory Compactors and Surface Miners– from Komatsu and L&T – continue to create value by enabling our customers to execute projects speedily and smoothly, setting new benchmarks in performance and productivity.
Starting in 1945 as distributors of Caterpillar (USA), L&T Construction & Mining Machinery subsequently entered into collaborations with global majors – such as Poclain SA-France, Albaret SA-France, JI Case-USA, Vibromax-Germany, Terex-USA and Detroit Diesel-USA, which saw it assemble and promote a series of imported products such as Hydraulic Excavators, Vibratory Compactors, Backhoe Loaders, Wheel Loaders, Dump Trucks and Generator Sets in the local market. This reinforced L&T’s strengths as the foremost engineering organization.
The strategic alliances with Komatsu (Japan) have endured over time and enabled us to launch world-class products in the Indian market, that have enabled L&T to expand its customer base and achieve leadership position. Our own product line from LTCEL have made strong inroads in road construction and highway development.
